Having a kid who is in the honor society can feel like a real claim to fame, but before you go on gloating about them on Facebook, it may be time to think more about their future. While public schooling has many benefits that can help your child get into college, if your child is already on the honor roll, you may want to send them to a private school instead. But why?
1. More of a Challenge
Being at the top of a class is great, but if your child isn't being challenged enough, they aren't going to achieve excellence. If your child wants a real shot at getting into a top university or ivy league school, they will need to be put into a more competitive environment where they are pushed intellectually. Make sure that you look for a private high school that has great test ratings, that has a history of working with ivy league schools, and that is considered a preparatory program.
2. More Opportunities
In addition to being pushed a little bit more intellectually, enrolling your child into a private high school may also provide them with unique opportunities. Because private schools charge tuition, they tend to have more money to spend on unique programs. For instance, your child will likely have smaller class sizes, access to in-depth second language classes, access to private instrument lessons, and the ability to play team sports in a smaller setting. By giving your child more opportunities to do things that are extracurricular, you can help them stand out from other college applicants which will help them have a better chance of getting in.
3. One-on-One Attention
Typically, public school teaches have larger class sizes, which means that they may not be able to give your straight-A student all of the attention that they may want. While your child may not need a lot of coaching or tutoring, having one-on-one attention may help them learn new things a lot quicker. When they are in a smaller private school setting, they may get to know professors on a more intimate level, which can help them learn a lot more about certain subjects. For instance, if they get more one-on-one attention from their literary teacher, they may learn some more things about literature from their teacher than they otherwise would.
